Political Paradox

It’s no use speculating about how much German weaponry and war material are used in crises and war zones alongside the U.S. world police, or how much money German companies earn on armed conflicts. It is hardly worth it to speculate to what extent Germany’s policies have helped ensure that these areas continue to endure hardships instead of achieving peace, prosperity and an outlook for the future.
In its October 2015 report, Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees said 331,226 people have applied for asylum in Germany so far this year. In 1953, this figure was 1,906. “In the current 2015 reporting year, the Federal Office received 331,226 first-time applications. During the same period last year, 135,634 first-time applications were received; this means the number of applications increased by 144.2 % in the past year. The number of renewal applications so far in 2015 (22,446) rose by 37.8% to 30,927. Therefore, the Federal Office could receive a total of 362,153 asylum applications in 2015. Compared to the 158,080 asylum applications last year, this represents more than twice the number of applications (+129.1%).”
Some EU countries expect similar figures. Each country tries to cope with the onslaught of those seeking asylum.
In Germany, several parties rage against immigration, as the federal government continues to invite people to apply for asylum. The people murmur, the press dramatizes protests by PEGIDA and others, and there are relief efforts. Citizens help wherever they can, believe they are doing good, and become the plaything of the great political theatre. No one is informed. Anyone looking for the big picture, only sees fragments. While some are losing strength because they want to help and do not want to abandon those who come to us from outside, others have found a new occupation: xenophobia, no matter how it manifests itself.
Anyone waiting for the chancellor to bring the drama to an end, waits in vain. Angela Merkel has nothing to say. She has other things to do. In the great confusion, in a state of paralysis, and with the hullabaloo of political gamesmanship, Merkel needs to put her long-guarded plan into operation and save face for all the German parties. The refugee crisis is in fact none at all; it is a sideshow that deflects from the real war, which will take place in Europe.
A European Community, unable to unite because no economic, environmental, social or legal standards of co-existence have been or will be created, is under fire. The U.S. wants no rival copying its model. It is convenient for those who love a crisis for the European Union to be under increasing pressure to pass political responsibility off to bogus government bodies such as the European Commission or the European Parliament. Big business has Europe on a leash and subject to its decisions alone.
Europe was already broke when the euro was introduced. Members of the European Community blackmailed each other to cover up this truth, and their only hope with the merger was that the standards established in the individual countries would be softened to the detriment of all.
Merkel, who inherited the unification of Europe from many predecessors, knew well that the Germans had rejected a unified Europe and a single currency. It was hard for her to go out and explain why this coup was still necessary. Chancellor Schmidt (rest in peace) failed on this count; Merkel’s mentor, Helmut Kohl, was not re-elected after revealing his enthusiasm for a united Europe. Merkel could be pleased that, along with her colleagues, she could validate these agreements without consulting the German people, thus denying the German people the right to codetermination, like the rest of the European people, and even parliamentary democracy in Germany and in the individual states.
It would be futile to try and figure out why Angela Merkel acted that way. It could be that she just wanted to believe in the idea of a united Europe, because she knew what a mess Europe was. To masquerade such bankruptcy as a success, run for election on such a lie, and then look forward to being re-elected, seems to be acceptable to the political brains. For them, it is also acceptable for Merkel to promise to exploit European unity in another way: Germany, with its high economic, environmental, social and legal standards, was not profitable. Business complains that taxes are too high. Workers complain that wages are too low. Growth is no longer possible under these circumstances - neither with the German mark nor with the euro. It was not in Merkel’s taste to declare national bankruptcy, or even cash out and make plans for reconstruction, and the other countries would not have liked that, because they would have no other option than to do the same thing. Instead of an orderly currency reform with the goal of creating and push-starting a value-based currency, they initiated currency reform in secret at the European level by introducing the euro. This bought time for all of the political powers to figure out which country has the lowest wages, prices, economic, environmental and social standards. All of the other countries would drop to these standards – without even signing an agreement. Development would simply happen with time. Political responsibility is barely detectable. The democratic Punch and Judy Show must go on. This cannot mean decline, war and misery. No one wanted to hear about Europe falling into hardship, especially not the voters, even if it might have been inevitable. Total silence is what the people want to hear, but with election slogans.
So, it might actually be laudable for Angela Merkel to behave before the world as though Germany still had something to give. As though it were in a position to counter this decline. That is something that Angela Merkel cannot do, which is why her rallying cries are meaningless election propaganda. It is also something that other European countries cannot do, because they also have nothing else to give.
The bottom line is that Europe was betrayed by politics. It will be entombed when the ECB stops buying junk bonds in the coming year, a plan which is a by-product of political machinations throughout Europe and will go down in history as another chapter of the euro crisis. However, nothing will be written on Europe’s tombstone except “Here lies the euro dictatorship.” It is obvious that it will no longer be worth a damn, but what is a worthless currency and the destruction of all standards of coexistence against such a lofty idea as that of a united Europe, which is worth any sacrifice, even that of war, crisis and misery. And if the latter one day predominate in Europe, who will still be asking about the (false) premises on which the idea was based? Who will than ask who is politically responsible? Who will then ensure that those who are politically responsible are punished? When the European sideshow becomes a theatre of war, we will have other problems to worry about. The chancellor may be speculating about that, too, and about taking another top job in which such magnificent political games can also be played. UN General Secretary might be just the right job, because that would mean Merkel could be as far away from Europe as possible, where the top job is elusive to her. The decline of the Europeans and the euro will take more time than Angela Merkel has left in office. Because of the poor attitude she has toward the job, she does nothing to stop this decline. Her poll results are good in Germany, however, and that is a political paradox!
